My alarm was set for 6:00am and I was on my way by 6:35. The bus was a little early so it was good I allowed plenty of time. For some reason the bus has been stopping across from the ruins but I had time to walk the block to the station. Now a station here might just be a bench with a roof on the sidewalk and that is what the Orosi bus station is. A block farther up is where the Paraiso bus stops so I sat on the bench and kept my eyes peeled in that direction. I didn't know if Anita was driving or taking the bus. I kept telling myself you are in Costa Rica and time is approximate. I saw her about 7:45 and went to join her. We went to meet Sonia, who is from Paraiso and was wearing one of our hats. She ended up spending the morning with us and showing us around. As soon as we arrived, we met up with Josephina, the young girl Anita has been helping. She is the one they bought the lovely dress for.h I offered her another hat and both she and her mother thanked me for what we are doing. We headed to the chemo room. I expected a few chairs and a few people. There must be 20 chairs and most of them were full of either people getting chemo or their companion. Anita had 6 hats from the Orosi ladies and 2 she and Iliana made. I had 2 bags of hats I had brought along. I gave the hats out to all the ladies. When we met with the volunteers later I left 8 more hats for ladies on other days. It seems each day there are different people getting chemo so lots of women who need hats. I came home with 2 hats, the ones with the yarn hair. Those may not be as popular. I didn't take the brimmed ones as I want to use those to sell. I do know I am going to have to learn to crochet faster.
The gratitude and blessings from these ladies for this simple item when they are going thru so much is what moved me the most.
Next was breakfast and checking out some shops and back on the bus. They were going to Paraiso and I was heading for WalMart as it was still morning. I have been to WalMart several times but never when it was so busy. I found no pumpkin, no cranberry sauce and no turkey. Not to say I didn't find lots. I now have 2 pans to cook turkeys if I ever find them and an oven big enough. I have ribbon to decorate the tables, orange napkins, 3 platters, navy pillows and enough to fill the red bag and another bag. So, since I had so much to carry I decided to take a taxi - yup, to the nursery. And needless to say I found lots and it is going to be very colorful around here. Two boxes full this time. They called me a taxi and I headed home with lots of goodies but still missing the main ingredients for Thanksgiving.
I have sent all my pictures to the crochet ladies and the craft ladies and they are very moved also. I will put my flowers first so none of the ladies shows up on Facebook.
I just love the one on the left. I even have 4 pointsettia.
Josephina and Sonia.
Myself, one of the volunteers and Anita.
The volunteers and the hats I left. The one on the right is recording it all in their book.
The man on the end spoke English so he was translating for me.
Not everyone has lost their hair yet and some are quite young.
