It has been 16 days since I wrote anything. Everyday I say I need to sit down and write and everyday I end up doing something else. Heather has been here and gone. It was a pretty quiet, rainy week. She brought me 3 suitcases full of goodies and the good thing is she felt better while she was here. We don't know why. Maybe the magic of Rio Macho!
I still haven't finished the baby quilt. The ladies are coming again today to see all the fabric and threads and goodies Heather brought. We went to the crochet ladies while she was here. I didn't know they were planning a luncheon and we were a bit late but had a good time eating traditional foods they made.
We went to Cartago and found the coffee she wanted at the old grocery store I go to.
Exciting news - the chicken store by the church and school now carries the butter I have been getting in Paraiso. He only gets it on Tuesday and to start he only gets 6. I went on Tuesday and bought 5. 3 for me and 1 for Ligia Sanchez and 1 for Jeanette. I had run out and even resorted to buying some of the other at the Super because I haven't been to Paraiso for the craft ladies for a few weeks. Aura's granddaughter was born Wednesday of last week and is having some health problems and is still in the hospital. That is why the ladies are coming here today.
Jose and a helper and a big gravel truck have been here and I now have a path of gravel from the front of the house to the gate and stepping stones from the front to my garden. Things are coming along great and plants are flowering.
We have been having lots of heavy rain, from tropical storms. All over Costa Rica there are problems with landslides and flooding. So far no problems here in my corner. My little creek is so beautiful with rushing water. Because ICE, the electrical company, is right down the road and they go up the mountain a lot the road is kept up. I did have an evening with no electricity and a day with no water because of a broken pipe. There is a type of fungus that grows on trees here and kills them. It holds water inside and mosquitos live in there. Heather and I spent time knocking them down so junk and water falls while you are doing that. Yup, we both needed showers and no water. At least once it started raining it washed us off.
Speaking of the mountain, Heather works to take at least 10,000 steps a day and she walked from here to the end of the best sidewalk in all of Costa Rica, about 3 kilometers up the mountain, then back down to the church and back here. Not sure my hips would agree to that yet. One day we took the road past the church and came across an animal rescue. We could hear lots of dogs. It says they take cats also. They are only open 8-11am so I haven't made it back yet when they are open. Heather said if she went she would give them all her money. There was one really big dog she wanted.
Ziomara is coming a week from Saturday and the crochet ladies are coming on Tuesday and that is all I have planned so far until the seniors on Nov. 17. October could be a quiet month. More gardening and planning and gathering for the Thanksgiving dinnners. Heather brought me more coconut, chocolate chips and a package of wild rice for the dressing.
Things I planted are starting to bloom. I also have had a few guayaba but the cas has slowed down. The tree by the deck is Azara or Columbian Guava. The beautiful plant Jose gave me that the ants ate all the flowers is blooming again. I will watch very close for ants and sprinkle everything I have that smells bad around it. I don't mind sharing my garden with ants but not if they are going to destroy it.
Afternoons are a little tricky here and this time of year there is often bad weather. September and October are the rainiest.
There is a man up the road from me who sits on his front porch and weaves baskets. The big one was $10.00 and the two smaller ones totaled $12.00.
I love these but have only seen one here at la Cabana
This is the plant Jose gave me and the ants ate the flowers.

Heather faced her fears and tried the hammock again.
She also taught Pups to high 5
I got a call from Emilio saying he was asked to call to say the ladies couldn't come today. I agreed to 10:00am tomorrow. I went out and locked the gate and 5 minutes later I got a call from one of the ladies asking me to open the gate, they were here. Seems they didn't get a call telling them tomorrow. I let them in and they bought what they wanted. The rest of the ladies will come tomorrow morning.
